The pandemic forced a rapid experiment in remote experiential learning that produced results few expected. Students completed internships from their apartments. Capstone projects were delivered to clients over Zoom. Service learning happened through digital platforms rather than in-person community engagement. Some of it worked remarkably well. Some of it revealed deep limitations in how we had been thinking about work-based learning.
As institutions settle into post-pandemic operations, the question is not whether to return to traditional internship models but how to build something better — combining the flexibility and reach of digital approaches with the depth and relationship-building of in-person experiences.
What We Learned
The pandemic period surfaced several important findings about experiential learning. First, geographic constraints had been artificially limiting student access to opportunities. Students at regional institutions gained access to companies in major tech hubs when remote internships became standard. Second, asynchronous work skills became visible as a distinct competency — some students thrived in remote settings while others struggled, revealing a skill gap that traditional programs had not addressed.
Third, the relational dimension of experiential learning proved harder to replicate digitally than the task dimension. Students could complete project work remotely, but they missed the informal mentorship, cultural immersion, and professional network building that come from being physically present in a workplace.

Hybrid Experiential Models
The most promising approaches combine remote and in-person elements in structured sequences. An internship might begin with two weeks of remote onboarding and asynchronous project work, transition to four weeks of on-site immersion, and conclude with a remote period focused on documentation and reflection. This structure gives students the flexibility of remote work while preserving the relationship-building that requires physical presence.
Micro-internships — short-term, project-based engagements lasting one to four weeks — have also emerged as a viable complement to traditional semester-long placements. These shorter engagements lower the barrier to entry for both students and employers, allow students to sample multiple industries or roles, and accumulate into a diverse portfolio of work experience.
Technology Infrastructure
Supporting hybrid experiential learning requires institutional investment in technology infrastructure that most universities did not have before 2020. Essential components include:
- Project management platforms that support asynchronous collaboration between students, faculty supervisors, and employer mentors
- Portfolio systems where students can document and showcase experiential learning outcomes
- Matching algorithms that connect students with opportunities based on skills, interests, and career goals
- Assessment tools that capture learning outcomes from work-based experiences in ways that translate to academic credit
Equity Considerations
Remote and hybrid models have the potential to democratize access to experiential learning, but only if equity is designed into the system. Students without reliable internet, quiet workspace, or professional home environments face barriers in remote internships that their peers do not. Institutions need to provide coworking stipends, equipment loans, and structured support for first-generation students navigating professional environments for the first time.
The future of experiential learning will be defined not by the technology we use but by how intentionally we design experiences that develop professional competence, build networks, and create equitable pathways to careers.
